Ergos Institute SE™ Short

The Transformative Power of Eros: Sexual Development, Trauma, Power Dynamics, and Intimacy

w/ Dr. Levine and Special Guest Lecturer Kimberly Johnson

DATE Saturday, May 15th - Sunday, May 16th, 2021
2-DAYS ONLINE 10:30 AM - 5:30 PM PDT (lunch 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM)
PREREQUISITE This new program is geared for SE Students, Psychotherapists of all kinds, and Professionals in the therapeutic and Bodywork fields.

In the thrusts of a global pandemic, two teachers from different generations and genders come together to explore the Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) approach to sexuality and trauma and challenge how we break down egalitarian sexuality power structures.

The wounds caused by sexual trauma and various forms of abuse leave profound scars of a physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual nature. Quite frequently, there is a direct connection between early sexual abuse and depression, anxiety, sexual acting out (or suppression), and various physical syndromes, including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel, and certain auto-immune conditions. Healing early sexual wounds calls for refined approaches that gradually befriend the body. Perhaps the greatest challenge is the re-awakening of sensual aliveness.

Healthy sexuality is rarely addressed in Psychotherapy. The body is often avoided or approached from the direction of what went wrong and neglects what brings us enjoyment and connection. We want to shift from sexual education predicated on fear and shame to a model based on pleasure, safety, and advanced knowledge of the nervous system. The result is life-giving, healthy sexuality that is inclusive of all of us.

This class will integrate pelvic, sexual, and reproductive anatomy for an embodied understanding of sexuality. As practitioners, when we integrate our own sexual health, we find our clients can bring more of their aliveness to session work.

Sexual wholeness involves:

  • Re-evaluating personal, familial, and cultural scripts.

  • Establishing healthy fluid boundaries.

  • Strengthening a sense of personal agency.

  • Building capacity for intimacy and charge.

  • Awakening sensual aliveness.

This training includes didactic lectures, demonstrations, and practical exercises focusing on application in SE therapeutic practice.

At the end of this training you will be able to:

  • Diagram the developmental stages of sexuality.

  • Define innocent, playful flirting that starts in early childhood as a form of play and how that connects to boundary rupture and repair.

  • Describe arousal and the nervous system.

  • Identify common over and under couplings with sexuality.

  • Demonstrate breathing exercises and tools to connect comfortably with your genitals and pelvic floor.

  • Evaluate confusion, shame, dissociation, and betrayal concerning sexual trauma.

  • Discuss how to support clients in identifying desires and moving towards healthy sexuality with themselves or others.
